So…yeah, the economy still kinda sucks. It’s still several weeks until final numbers are out for retail sales in December, and while things have certainly improved, we’re not exactly swimming in cash, a la Scrooge McDuck. However, little makeup splurges make life bearable — and I’m not the only one. I gave my mom one of my favorite lip products as a gift for the holidays, and one of my besties got me a luxurious lippie as a gift. Clearly there’s something to this.
Lipstick, more than other cosmetics, is where I can experiment without buyer’s remorse because I know what colors I like and what looks good on me. And yes, I’ve used whole tubes of lipstick — I’m not hiding a drawer of rejects. We’ll get to what I use and repurchase later this month.
Working for a makeup artist in college who introduced me to Makeup Alley turned me into a makeup and ingredient snob. I got an insider look at the industry, met many company founders and premier makeup artists for brands who came to teach us to use their products. I was already a beauty junkie, but that job ignited a passion for skincare and cosmetics that will never die. And when I love a product, I feel compelled to let everyone know!
Over the next 4 weeks I am going to share my favorite lipsticks and lip products with you, my gorgeous readers. So, without further adieu, let me introduce my latest obsession, Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters. Full disclosure — these are my opinions, and I haven’t been compensated by anyone for this post.
Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters
That’s right, a drugstore product!!! This newish line of hybrid lipstick/glosses bare a striking resemblance to Clinique’s Butter Shines, but are almost half the price. They are a particularly good deal if you can find a drugstore offering buy one, get one 50% off. Cha-ching!
These little bullets of joy give a punch of color that is still sheer enough to use without a lipliner. They can be layered to a point, but they are really meant to be a hybrid between lipsticks and glosses, so too much layering would turn into a goopy, not so cute mess. These don’t have noticeable shimmer and are slightly less cushion-y than the Clinique lip butters, but in my opinion they stay put better without becoming drying.
I especially love how these feel on the lips, because they are truly moisturizing, which is nice this time of year. I don’t really like glosses in the winter because my hair always blows around and gets stuck to my lips, or it ends up all over my coat or scarf. The Lip Butters aren’t sticky like most glosses, and are quicker to apply than a wand.
Revlon’s site says they contain several moisturizing ingredients, including mango, shea and coconut butters. The site also says there are 20 shades. I can tell you from my own unscientific shopping “experiments”, the drugstores are carrying the best selection. The Targets I’ve been to are only carrying maybe 10 of them. I know that opaque, matte lips are more typical for Fall and Winter, but for an easy, fast option for daytime that offers some moisture, these are pretty spiffy. The red shade I’ve been using is good enough for a daytime retro look, too.
My favorites of the ones I’ve tried are 070 Cherry Tart — a pretty sheer, true red, and 090 Sweet Tart, a bright, hot pink. I’m also loving the icy pink, 080 Strawberry Shortcake, and the bright orange, 015 Tutti Frutti. Seriously though, I am going to have to pick up more of them, because I am having way too much fun playing with these.
